Support:
Support groups are available for family members and for individuals with an
illness. Support helps people realize they are not alone–that there are
families in their own communities who understand and want to help them meet the
challenges they face.
Education:
Free education classes are available so that people can learn about the disease
affecting them or a family member and about the resources available for
treatment, housing and financial aid. Education and outreach help to inform the
general public about severe and persistent brain disorders to help reduce the
stigma associated with mental illness and to build understanding
Advocacy: As
people experience firsthand the difficulties of living with serious and
persistent brain disorders, they need opportunities to advocate for change such
as improved services, greater access to treatment, housing, employment,
insurance parity, etc. As an advocacy organization, NAMI tracks and keeps
members informed about important political and social issues affecting people
with mental illnesses and their families.
